The Martin Luther King, Jr. display celebrates the life and achievements of the U.S. civil rights leader. The collection of books and other materials represent his life and work, from 1944 to 1968, and includes biographies, speeches, manuscripts, sermons, and other writings of historical significance.

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 15th is a federal holiday which recognizes the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He first came to national attention as leader of the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott of 1955–56, and was one of the organizers of the march on Washington, DC in 1963 to demand racial equality, during which he delivered his famous ‘I have a dream’ speech. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in December 1964 for his commitment to achieving racial justice through nonviolent action.
