Banned Books Week

Join McDermott Library to raise awareness about how harmful and limiting censorship can be.

Tuesday, October 10 at 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center (DGA)

Each year the Eugene McDermott Library holds a community reading to celebrate the freedom to read banned and challenged books. The American Library Association (ALA) describes Banned Books Week as “an annual event, now in its 40th year, celebrating the freedom to read. It spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. The entire book community — librarians, library staff, booksellers, publishers, journalists, educators, students, and readers — come together in shared support of the freedom to read and seek knowledge.” There is perhaps nothing more inclusive than reading. Knowledge, life lessons, ideas, ideals, imagined worlds, and possibilities are in the pages of books. We improve our communication while meeting people and characters.

Let Freedom Read! Books unite us all, sharing a wealth of knowledge, giving us a new perspective, and connecting us to the world in which we live. This event will feature selected UTD students, faculty, and staff reading passages from banned and challenged books.
