Celebrate National Poetry Month with Our Annual Haiku Contest


To celebrate National Poetry Month during the month of April, the library is once more holding its annual Haiku Contest. Visit the online archives to see past submissions and winners. See if you qualify according to the full details below.

Contest details: Create an original haiku poem about the library for your chance to win a McDermott swag bag and serious bragging rights.

Formatting details: 3-lined, library-themed poem;
Line 1 is 5 syllables,
Line 2 is 7 syllables,
Line 3 is 5 syllables.

Submission requirements: Only currently enrolled UTD students are eligible to participate.

Submit your library-themed haiku to mattmm@utdallas.edu with the subject line Haiku Contest 2025 via your UT Dallas email by April 9th. Submissions from non-UTD email are invalid.

The winner will be announced April 16th on the library’s website and social media.

Please note that submitted poems become the property of the Eugene McDermott Library.
